By now most of us have heard of the incredible results that elite athletes get when they consistently add visualization techniques to their training regimen. Athletes have found that the use of these mental techniques are turbo-charging their performance. We can use visualizations effectively in our business life, in all parts of our personal life as well as our a cappella competitive life for greater results.
So what exactly is visualization anyway? Visualization is the use of mental imagery and intention to obtain an objective. In effect, visualization is a kind of structured daydream. Unlike daydreaming however, it is done in the first person and in the present tense. You imagine what you would like in a situation and paint a picture in your mind that is as specific as possible and then add sensory images into that picture for even more effect.
Getting Started:
-find a place where you won’t be disturbed, close your eyes and think of the result you want to achieve (eg/acing your interview, achieving your peak performance)
-call on your five senses to paint a powerful picture of the result – just as if you are there. Use sight, feel, sound, smell and taste to bring your visualization to life. Be as specific as possible. Add passion.
-recall that visualization as often as possible throughout your day
-take action : when you can visualize the path to what you want, you must be prepared to actually walk it in the real world. You need to take action if you want to make the visualization real.
